Description of the Podmoskovny garlic variety, its characteristics and yield
Podmoskovny garlic is suitable for growing in the climatic conditions of the middle zone. It is planted as winter. For summer residents, this is convenient, because all planting work can be carried out in the fall, and in late spring you can eat young heads.
Description of the variety
Garlic near Moscow is classified as a shooting species, so it is planted a month before the expected onset of frost on the soil. In the middle of the growing season, the plant forms an arrow with an inflorescence. Subsequently, seeds ripen there, the number of which per head reaches 150 pieces.
Podmoskovny garlic is propagated by several types:
- teeth;
- single-tooth;
- seeds.
The characteristics promise high yield and excellent marketability of the product. This explains the increased demand for garlic near Moscow among summer residents and farmers.
The leaves of the plant reach 40 cm in height and up to 2 cm in width. The tops are colored dark green, a characteristic waxy bloom is noticeable. Up to 1.9 kg of high-quality garlic is harvested from one running meter. Ripening occurs 112 days after the first spring shoots appear.
Podmoskovny has small flat-round heads. The integumentary scales occupy 5 layers and are painted white with purple veins. Up to 7 cloves weighing up to 12 grams are formed in each head. The bulbs grow on average 60 grams. The pulp has a delicate creamy color, strong garlic aroma. The taste of the Moscow Region is very spicy, which not everyone likes.
Advantages and disadvantages
This garlic variety has far more advantages than disadvantages. Positive qualities include:
- frost resistance;
- resistance to major diseases;
- universal use;
- good keeping quality;
- undemanding care.
Podmoskovny is eaten not only raw as a seasoning for certain dishes, but also amenable to heat treatment and conservation. At the same time, taste and aroma are preserved. Vitamin paste is prepared from arrows, and also pickled.
Of the shortcomings, it is worth noting that garlic should be consumed before the New Year, then it begins to dry out, sprouts and loses its marketability. Also Podmoskovny is not suitable for spring planting.
Growing features
Particular attention is paid to the timing of planting winter garlic near Moscow on the beds. If you plant early, then before the onset of frost, the plant will expel the leaves and the chances of successfully overwintering are reduced. And if you are late with planting, then the garlic will not have time to properly take root. Unrooted plantings die already at -10 ° С.
Successful wintering is also influenced by the amount of snowfall, the timing of the onset of frost on the soil, soil moisture during the planting period and after it. It should be borne in mind that now the climatic conditions in the regions are changing markedly, therefore, the planting dates recommended by previous generations are significantly shifted.
Winter garlic needs mandatory fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers. They are produced in the spring, a couple of weeks after the first greens appear. Re-fertilization is carried out after another 2 weeks. Organic matter is analogous to chemical feeding. Both a solution of fresh manure and fermented nettle infusion are suitable.
Winter garlic near Moscow (the description of the variety is given above) needs weekly watering. If it is rainy, damp weather outside, then watering the beds is not worth it at all, and the harvest time is postponed. With an excess of moisture in the soil, the garlic ripens later, and the quality of the heads decreases.
Caring for the Moscow Region consists in the timely loosening of the soil and the regular removal of weeds. During the growing season and the formation of heads, the plants are fed and fertilized.
Harvesting and storage
Harvesting takes place in late June - early July. Garlic near Moscow is harvested exclusively in dry weather. Otherwise, the entire crop may rot. If the weather conditions are unfavorable, it is better to postpone the harvest time than to lose it later.
It is necessary to dig up the plants in such a way that the roots are not damaged. The rest of the soil is crumbled, and the garlic is tied or laid out in a thin layer in a cool dry place for further drying. In this case, the roots and stems are not cut immediately after digging from the garden. Of these, useful components continue to enter the head. Pruning is carried out only after complete drying.
Podmoskovny garlic is perfectly stored on the lower shelf of the refrigerator or on a closed insulated balcony. The air temperature there should not fall below 0 ° С. If there are no other options, then you can save the crop in indoor conditions (for example, in a pantry). The heads are tied or placed in a basket and placed in a dark place. Only in this case will they begin to dry out or germinate earlier.
Garlic near Moscow, which was not consumed before it lost its marketability and sprouted, can be used for planting and eating young. Naturally, you will not be able to get a full-fledged crop suitable for long-term storage, but you can eat the first young greens.
This variety of garlic absolutely suits me, I have never had any problems with its cultivation. It tolerates frost perfectly and can be stored for a long time. The aroma and taste is pronounced, I recommend it to everyone.
