Description of the potato variety Timo, its characteristics and yield
Potatoes are an essential part of any diet. Any housewife will appreciate a potato that does not darken after cooking, and has a short growing season, such as the Timo potato variety.
Description of the variety
Timo potatoes are early ripening species. The yield indicator from 1 hectare is up to 50 centners. The collection of young potatoes begins within 50 days after direct planting. The specified variety is table variety. Timo potatoes are subject to all types of heat treatment, boil quickly. His homeland is Finland.
Due to its high starch content, Timo is suitable for the production of high-quality starch. The variety has an unlimited shelf life. Possesses resistance to such dangerous plant diseases as black leg, scab, tuberous cancer.
During growth, Timo Khankkiyan's potatoes form a small spreading bush that requires hilling. The green mass of shoots is relatively low. The leaves on the shoots are light green. The inflorescences of this variety are small, there are pale blue or light purple tones.
After 50 days of active development, tasty fruits ripen: tubers of a light yellow hue with a white tone weighing from 70 to 120 g. It has an increased taste, has a sweetish taste. The general description of the variety contains all the most important characteristics.
Landing rules
Very often, low yields of a variety are associated with improper preparation before planting. Seed samples of Timo are prepared approximately one month before planting in the ground. Prepare the material for planting as follows:
- Healthy potatoes are selected.
- The seed is calibrated by size and weight.
- Large tubers are cut for planting.
- Germination and heating of tubers is carried out.
- Selected specimens are treated with a solution of useful micronutrient fertilizers and special means.
Also, prepared samples are processed with ash in order to increase productivity and economic efficiency.
Growing
This type of potato is grown in the same way as everyone else. To get a good harvest of tasty potatoes, they choose high-quality seed from trusted producers. Germinated potatoes are used as planting material, the variety is grown exclusively in the open field, depending on weather conditions, they are planted in the soil in April-May.
At the same time, the planting depth is shallow - only 5 cm, for this very reason hilling of the soil is required. Planting of this variety is performed as follows:
- In the fall, they prepare the site by digging up the soil, introducing nutritious manure.Useful mineral compounds are added during the direct planting of selected potatoes.
- The holes are formed with a shovel, keeping a distance of 30–40 cm between them. Large germinated tubers are placed one by one in the hole, small ones by 2-3 pieces.
When planting tubers, form ridges, they are necessary for reliable protection from harmful sun rays. From the direct sun, unprotected potatoes can simply turn green and bake.
Care features
When giving preference to these varieties of potatoes, remember the important rules of care, following which you get a good harvest. The main irrigation method for Timo is uniform drip irrigation. So the plant is watered directly under the root, the consumption of irrigation water is reduced, and the daily efficiency increases significantly.
Do not forget to periodically loosen the soil so that the roots breathe and develop correctly. Timely spraying against dangerous pests and diseases: Colorado potato beetle, late blight will save the future harvest.
In order to increase yields and accelerate growth, the plant is fed with a nutrient solution of liquid manure. For feeding potatoes, stinging nettles rotted in water are used. For this purpose, take 10 kg of fresh nettles, chop finely, place them in a 100-liter barrel of water for a week. After manipulation, a bucket of liquid manure is added to the composition, 1 liter of liquid is poured under each bush. Timo also needs feeding at the stage of bud formation, in this case 1 liter of water mixed with ash is added. Ash is added 1 glass to 1 bucket of water. The third time the nutrient composition is applied during active flowering of the bud in the form of liquid manure.
Provide Timo's potatoes with moderate watering, as the lower leaves of the bush wilt. Watered with water heated to 20 degrees. During the period of active flowering, it needs abundant watering.
Important! You need to water the shoots in the evening so that the moisture from the leaves has time to dry out.
It also requires periodic loosening of the soil to a depth of 2–3 cm; they do this carefully so as not to damage the tubers. To get rid of weeds, the soil around the bush is mulched. Hilling is done to provide oxygen to the roots and prevent late blight.
Advantages and visible disadvantages
This variety has the following positive characteristics:
- High yield rates.
- Excellent taste.
- Resistant to drought and excess moisture.
- Cancer resistant.
- The short period of full maturation is 50–70 days.
- Large tubers are resistant to various mechanical damage.
- The best option for natural cultivation in non-standard conditions.
Despite the many advantages, Timo's tubers have a couple of disadvantages:
- mature potatoes sprout quickly when stored at home.
- Reduced resistance to common late blight and nematode.
- Reacts to a sudden cold snap during planting, due to which yield indicators are reduced.
Pests and diseases
This variety of potato tubers is resistant to various types of diseases, provided it is properly cared for. It is resistant to cancer, scab, blackleg and dangerous rhizoctonia. But to such a disease as late blight, tubers are susceptible.
Tubers have increased resistance to harmful viral diseases in the form of foliage twisting and a dangerous strain of the "M" group, therefore, periodic renewal of seed material is not required. Timo's Finnish potatoes practically do not degenerate.
So that the Colorado potato beetle does not attack, potatoes are sprayed with a natural solution of ash. Watering the bushes with this solution will help avoid dangerous rotting in wet weather.Planting sweet mustard, fine calendula, and various legumes around the sturdy potatoes will help protect ripe fruits from the attack of a dangerous wireworm.
An infusion of garlic relieves late blight, for this, 200 g of garlic are chopped, poured with water, insisted for strength for 2 days, bred in a bucket, then the shoots are watered. The procedure is performed every 10 days.
Harvesting and storage
To keep the tubers as long as possible, it is important to choose the right room for it. The room must be dry, with excellent ventilation, without the penetration of sunlight. Optimal temperature regime for storing potatoes - + 4-6 degrees.
Agronomists store tubers in specially prepared vegetable stores, and gardeners in cellars or piles. When storing in a cellar, it is important that the tubers do not lie on the ground; wooden boxes or nets are made for them. For storing potatoes, special depressions are made in the ground, piles filled with tubers and covered with straw, buried in the ground. This method preserves the harvest for a long time.
