To obtain a dark color of the fruit, breeders crossed red tomatoes with their wild-growing "brothers" and selected bushes with a darker color of ripening tomatoes for further selection.

New varieties with dark colored fruits are the result of long-term efforts of scientists. The dark color of the skin and flesh is given by a mixture of red pigments and anthocyanins, which give the vegetables a purple hue.
