Description of the variety of tomato Black pineapple and cultivation features
Tomato Black Pineapple is one of the exotic varieties with an unusual color of ripe tomatoes and a good yield. Breeders started breeding tomatoes with a dark skin color several decades ago. And now vegetable crops with an unusual color of the ripening harvest are found in the beds as often as ordinary varieties.
Description and characteristics of the variety
Tomatoes Black Pineapple belongs to the indeterminate type of tomato, ripening is medium. The bush reaches a height of 1.2-1.4 m.
The description begins with an overview of the Black Pineapple variety itself. Bushes are tall, well branched, strongly leafy. Shoots - erect, high, requiring obligatory garters to the trellises or other supports. Additional supports are placed under the stems with ripening fruits to avoid breaking off the shoots.
This black vegetable requires compulsory pinching. For a good yield, it is better to form a plant in 2-3 shoots.
The ripening tomatoes are flat-round, unusually large - up to 0.5 kg each, fleshy, with excellent taste. And the color of the skin and pulp is unique and original. The skin is dense, not prone to cracking, brownish in ripe tomatoes with a greenish tint. Ripe tomatoes become purple in color. The pulp combines several shades at once: pink, red, green and yellow. In the context, each ripe tomato has its own individual pattern. There are few seeds in the cells. The amount of dry matter is 5-6%.
If people do not know about the peculiar color of Black Pineapple, then they believe that the crop began to rot before it ripened. But the taste of these species is much better than that of their red or yellow "counterparts".
The harvested crop perfectly tolerates transportation, can be stored for a long time at a low temperature. Black Pineapple is unsuitable for preservation because of its large size, but in salads and other snacks it looks great and gives them a pleasant taste.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Black Pineapple variety
The advantages of this variety include:
- high productivity;
- great taste and unusual color of ripe tomatoes;
- excellent keeping quality of the crop;
- the harvested crop tolerates transportation well.
However, Black Pineapple also has quite tangible disadvantages:
- the bushes require a mandatory garter and the installation of supports for the shoots;
- it is imperative to form bushes and regularly remove stepchildren;
- the crop is not suitable for canning;
- the variety is picky about making regular dressings;
- in rainy, cold weather, tomatoes ripen more sour.
Variety stories
Currently, there are many varieties of tomatoes with a black color of ripening vegetables. It is believed that such plants were bred with the addition of GMOs. But this is not true. To obtain a dark color of the fruit, breeders crossed red tomatoes with their wild-growing "brothers" and selected bushes with a darker color of ripening tomatoes for further selection.
New varieties with dark colored fruits are the result of long-term efforts of scientists. The dark color of the skin and flesh is given by a mixture of red pigments and anthocyanins, which give the vegetables a purple hue.
