Description and technology of growing a daffodil variety British Gamble
Bulbous perennials grow in the subtropics, feel fine in middle latitudes, bloom with the arrival of spring, delight with lush corollas or graceful forms. In 2013, a new variety of tubular daffodil British Gamble was presented at the Dutch show with delicate petals framing a tall crown. The refined beauty of the flower immediately attracted the attention of gardeners from different countries.
Description and characteristics of the British Gamble daffodil
British Gamble grows in height up to 0.4–0.5 m, forms strong peduncles with corollas, which seem to be made of white porcelain. The length of the tube, which is framed by a crown with corrugated bright pink edges, reaches 14 cm.The diameter of the flower is only a couple of centimeters smaller.
Milky-creamy scented petals stand out against the background of the orange crown, gleaming with lemon highlights.
From daffodils on strong peduncles, lush bouquets are obtained, tubular varieties in group plantings look elegant.
Benefits of buying
From the large British Gamble bulbs sold in stores, graceful, huge flowers grow. Daffodils bloom early, fill parks and gardens with a fragrant aroma, give flower beds and landscape compositions an elegant look. Bulbous perennial is easily accepted, less whimsical than lilies or peonies, which are not inferior to elegance and beauty.

Selection and preparation of the landing site
To grow the British Gamble variety, it is not necessary to assign the brightest place, the flowers are comfortable and in partial shade. However, it is not recommended to plant perennials on a site that was previously used for cultivation:
- tomatoes;
- peppers;
- bulbous flowers.
So that British Gamble does not get wet in the spring from excess moisture, does not die in the icy soil in winter, before planting the daffodil, expanded clay or small pebbles are poured on the bottom of the dug holes, sand is added. Grooves are made on the surface of the site for water to exit. Soil with high acidity is diluted with ash.
Seedling preparation
In one place, British Gamble grows up to 5 years, but in order for the daffodil to please with lush flowering, when buying, you need to try to choose large bulbs without damaged areas.Before planting, the material is recommended to be dipped in a warm solution of a fungicide or potassium permanganate for at least half an hour.
Landing rules
In the south, where the average daily temperature rises rapidly in spring and the earth immediately warms up, the British Gamble variety will develop poorly and will not have time to bloom. It is better to plant daffodils in spring in mid-latitudes, hardening the bulbs in a cold room.
You can send a perennial into the ground, starting from mid-August, and it is necessary to complete the work before the first days of October, then the bulbs will strengthen and put down roots.
Fresh manure should not be introduced into the ground before the autumn planting of tubular daffodils, but it is necessary to fertilize the soil with superphosphate and potassium salt per sq. m 50 g of one substance and 30 g of another. It is better to use a mineral mixture in the spring. The depth of the dug hole is affected by:
- soil structure;
- the size of the planting material;
- growing time of daffodil in a flower bed.
In landscape compositions, flowers are placed in a square-row way every 20 cm or using a 25 x 15 scheme. 2 or 3 British Gamble bulbs are also planted in 1 hole.
In the middle latitudes in autumn, the flowerbed is covered with straw, pine needles, and dry grass.
Subtleties of crop care
In order for British Gamble to please with lush flowering, the plant must be looked after not only in the spring, but throughout the entire growing season.
Watering and fertilizing
Although daffodils do not tolerate stagnant moisture, they require irrigation in hot and dry weather. On a flower bed with an area of 1 sq. m consume at least 2 buckets of water. Abundant watering is carried out after the end of flowering, since nutrients continue to accumulate in green leaves at this time.
When growing the British Gamble variety in summer cottages where the land is not fertile, the culture is fed with mineral mixtures:
- when sprouts appear;
- during the formation of buds;
- during the flowering period.
After the petals fall off, phosphorus and potash fertilizers are applied, 40 and 20 g per 1 sq. m. Top dressing of bulbous perennials is advised to be combined with irrigation.
Mulching and loosening
To reduce the evaporation of moisture, the ground under the daffodils is covered with hay, sawdust, and dry grass. After watering and rain, the soil under the plants needs to be loosened, since British Gamble does not develop well in compacted heavy soil.
Pruning
It is not recommended to shorten the green leaves immediately after flowering, since at this time the bulbs accumulate nutrients. Only yellowed or drying tops are cut to the base.
Preparing for the winter period
In regions where there are often severe frosts and no snow falls, beds with tubular daffodils are abundantly watered and covered with needles, sawdust, straw, slate. In the southern regions, flowers do not freeze without mulching.
Disease and pest control methods
If the rules of planting and care are not followed, perennials are affected by rot, die from fusarium, suffer from a viral mosaic.
For the prevention of diseases, the bulbs are treated with potassium permanganate, the plants are sprayed with fungicides containing copper.
Flowers attract:
- narcissus flies;
- shaggy bronze;
- onion hoverflies.
It is impossible to manually collect pests in a flower bed. To cope with parasites, plants and the ground are sprayed with insecticides in the form of "Aktara", "Decis", "Aktellik".
Breeding flowers
When British Gamble is propagated by seeds, daffodil loses its varietal characteristics. Growing a perennial in a flower bed, at the end of August, they dig up the bulbs along with new formations, clean them of the soil, the remains of the tops and separate the material for planting.
Selected healthy specimens are soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate, dried, left for a short time in a cool place, and then planted in the holes.

White daffodils are good in compositions with coniferous shrubs, they look harmoniously against a dark green background. Flowers are placed on the lawn in the form of arrays, seated in groups, creating picturesque lawns.
