How to properly inject a goat with your own hands and a scheme for administering drugs
Injection manipulation is not necessarily associated with animal disease. Animals are often vaccinated by injection. An injection is the best way to ensure fast action of drugs, which is important in resuscitation therapy. Therefore, it is advisable for each owner to know how to correctly give a goat an injection, the basic schemes of the procedure.
What is needed for this?
When treating animals, medications are often administered using syringes. As a rule, the type of medicine determines the method of its administration, the volume of the syringe:
- for intradermal injections use syringes with a volume of 1-2 ml, with short needles;
- to do the procedure subcutaneously, choose syringes of the required volume (it is advisable to focus on the amount of the drug so as not to fill the syringe several times);
- for intramuscular manipulations, syringes with a volume of 1-20 ml are selected.
To give an injection, you will need a syringe of the required volume, a cotton pad, and a disinfectant. When choosing instruments, the methods of administration of various drugs (intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intra-abdominal, intraosseous) are taken into account.
In what cases is it necessary to give an injection?
Most diseases are vaccinated by injection. Mandatory vaccinations are given for a number of diseases:
- foot and mouth disease is quickly transmitted through animal contact. Therefore, in addition to vaccination, they do a general disinfection of the premises, all cells;
- to prevent the occurrence of smallpox, goats begin to inject the vaccine from 3 months of age. Revaccination is done every year;
- it is important to prevent brucellosis in animals, since the disease is transmitted to humans through milk. Animals from 2-3 months of age are subject to compulsory vaccination in farms with an unfavorable situation for the disease.
At the age of three months, pets are vaccinated against anthrax. Adult animals are given injections every year. Be sure to vaccinate all goats arriving at the farm.
How to do it correctly?
Before giving the injection, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. In the animal, the skin area intended for the administration of the drug is disinfected. Manipulations are carried out according to the following schemes:
- an intradermal injection is made into a small fold of skin (on the underside of the tail), which is collected with the fingers of the left hand. In this case, the needle is inserted under the skin gradually, keeping it almost parallel to the surface;
- to make a subcutaneous injection, the goat is fixed in a standing position. The area of the inner thigh or the middle third of the neck is suitable for manipulation. Before manipulation, a large fold of skin is captured with the middle and thumb, and a depression is made in the fold with the index. The needle is inserted to a depth of 1.5-2 cm with a sharp movement;
- when the drug is administered intramuscularly, the goats are kept in a standing position. For injections, areas are selected with the location of large muscle groups (inner thigh, upper or middle part of the neck). The needle is inserted into the muscle perpendicular to the body surface, to a depth of 2-3 cm.
If the syringe is filled with the drug 2-3 times, then the needle is not removed from the skin or body, but only the syringe is disconnected. At the end of the procedure, the injection site is treated with a disinfectant, lightly massaged.
It is not difficult to inject pets on your own. You need to prepare the instrument in accordance with the instructions for the drug, know the injection scheme. Goats practically do not get sick with a properly composed diet and good care, and they tolerate periodic vaccinations.
