Description and characteristics of Pat Austin roses, the subtleties of growing

Bred by breeder David Austin, roses are considered to be among the most beautiful. The rose variety Pat Austin, named after the breeder's wife, is often used to decorate the garden due to the bright and defiant color of the petals.

Description and characteristics of rose Pat Austin

The English park rose Pat Austin was bred in 1995 and inherited the characteristics of two well-known varieties - Graham Thomas and Abraham Derby. The variety is appreciated for its original color. The inner side of the petals of a bright yellow color looks harmoniously with the delicate copper back. As the flowers grow, the color changes to coral or cream.

Sprawling bushes, up to 1 m high. Large leaves of rich green color grow on the stems. Flowers can be formed singly, but more often they are collected in brushes of 3-5 pieces. Shoots are slender and often lean towards the ground.

Main positive and negative aspects

When planning the planting of roses, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of the selected variety in advance. The Pat Austin variety has the following advantages:

  • attractive appearance and pronounced aroma;
  • re-flowering throughout the season, subject to proper care;
  • frost resistance.

The main disadvantage is the rapid aging of roses when exposed to high temperatures, which is why the flowers do not have time to fully bloom. Also, a minor disadvantage is that Pat Austin's roses are not suitable for cutting, since the shoots do not hold large flowers well, and the petals quickly crumble.

The subtleties of growing

In order for the plantations to actively grow and bloom on time, a number of cultivation features must be observed. For the Pat Austin variety, the planting location and period, the condition of the seedling, the type of soil, preliminary preparation and direct planting technology are important.

In what form is the landing

On the garden plot, seedlings are placed, which have managed to form dense roots. Also, seedlings should have 2-3 stems about 20 cm high, with green buds.

Boarding time

It is best to plant Pat Austin roses in the spring, after the risk of recurrent frosts leaves, but before the onset of heat. As a rule, the optimal planting time is the second half of April. The advantage of spring planting is that the plantings will have time to adapt to new conditions and will have time to grow strongly during the warm period.

Location selection

The Pat Austin variety does not tolerate a hot climate, so flowers should be placed in a shaded place where the sun's rays fall for several hours a day, preferably in the first half of the day. Placing in a constantly illuminated area will lead to the occurrence of many diseases and the formation of small buds. If there is no suitable place in the garden area, it is allowed to independently create a shelter that casts a shadow.

How to prepare the soil and flower for planting

The pit for placing the seedling is prepared a couple of weeks before planting so that the soil has time to settle. A suitable pit depth is 60-70 cm. Such dimensions are necessary due to the further growth of roots. The filling of the hole depends on the type of soil:

  1. Heavy soil is diluted with sand and organic matter. Organic matter includes compost, manure, wood ash.
  2. Soil with a high content of sand is mixed with organic matter and clay.
  3. If there was a flower garden on the ground before, then you will have to completely change the soil mixture, since it will not contain the necessary nutrients.

Before being transferred to a permanent place, the seedling is soaked in a rooting stimulator, which helps it to take root better. It is enough to place the seedling in the solution for 3-4 hours.

Landing procedure

The seedling is placed in a prepared hole, the roots are spread in different directions and sprinkled with soil mixture. The ground around the seedling is carefully tamped with hands, watered abundantly and covered with a layer of mulch.

Further care of the plant

Pat Austin's roses need constant comprehensive care. The implementation of basic agrotechnical techniques contributes to the active development of plantings and the preservation of decorative characteristics.

Watering rules and humidity

Park rose bushes moisturize as the soil dries. To check, you can take a lump of earth from the top layer in your hand - if it crumbles, another watering is required. As a rule, with an average amount of precipitation, it is enough to water the plants once every 5-7 days. For each bush, about 15 liters of warm, settled water are consumed.

Top dressing and soil quality

Throughout the season, flowers must receive the required amount of nutrients. In order for the shoots of roses to be strong, special attention should be paid to autumn feeding, when the plants need phosphorus and potassium. It is allowed to carry out 3 dressings with an interval of 2-3 weeks, subject to warm weather.

Also, the Pat Austin variety needs foliar feeding. It is advisable to apply them every couple of weeks using complex fertilizer. It is recommended to add humates, chelate complex, "Zircon" and "Epin" to the top dressing.

Pruning and replanting

To shape the plantings and grow a spreading bush with thick branches in the spring, light pruning is carried out. The weakest and most frozen shoots are removed from the plants. If the goal is to grow a compact bush with a large number of flowers, it is pruned by 2/3.

To transplant roses, they are carefully dug out along the perimeter of the crown of the bush. When extracting flowers, capture a large earthen ball to protect the roots.

Roses are transferred to a new hole, covered with earth and watered.

Disease and pest control methods

Not high enough immunity of roses Pat Austin often leads to damage with black spot, powdery mildew and gray mold. As measures to combat diseases, they are treated with special fungicidal preparations.

Of the parasites, spider mites and aphids are dangerous to roses. You can scare off pests with the help of insecticides and spraying the bushes with soapy water.

Infected and fallen leaves need to be raked and burned so as not to attract more insects.

Plant propagation

The easiest way to propagate roses is to split the bush. The separated parts are planted, adhering to standard rules, in pre-prepared pits with fertilizers. A year later, full-fledged bushes are formed from the dells, endowed with the qualities inherent in the Pat Austin variety.

Application in garden design

The rich and original color of the petals allows you to diversify the landscape design of any garden plot. Shade tolerance opens up the possibility of planting in places where other flowers will wilt.

Pat Austin roses look good in compact hedges or as a contrast against greenery.
